Sunday 20th June 2010 Sunday League X1 v Chiswick & Latymer

Going into our 4th Sunday league appearance the T's needed to bounce back to have any chance of winning the league title. Thankfully the result saw us back in the mix 2 wins – 2 Losses.

After winning the toss and electing to bat the new look Twickenham First XI opening pair of Meredith & Hornby had a dress rehearsal for the premier league clash with Teddington.

A solid but rather slow start for the pair saw the score only reaching 39/0 off the first 10 overs. What then followed would seem to an outsider a spot of backyard cricket and not a Sunday league fixture. The opening pair plundered the Chiswick bowlers to all parts of the ground with the senior partner “PB” Meredith out for 192. “The Rock” Hornby continued the onslaught and provided an excellent platform for the incoming “Chef” Muil who also enjoyed the Chiswick wicket contributing a hard hitting 49. “The Rock” Hornby fell with less than a dozen balls remaining in our innings for a solid 90. The T's reached a large total of 354/4 off the alloted 45 overs. Unfortunately for the remaining batsmen in the shed their talents were not required for the Chiswick fixture.

The interval saw a league “PB” personal best tea from our opponents. The variety and volume of dishes tempted the T's players to pile on the pounds. Many of which took the opportunity to flex their stomach muscles.

With 350 + on the board the T's took to the field quietly confident the 2 match loosing streak in Sunday league matches would be broken. An early wicket off the bowling of “Sunday Specialist” Shah and a steady slips catch from “Buckets” Fairn got the boys going. “Young Gun” O'Brien had the cheeky Chiswick number 3 in allsorts of bother and another dropped catch from Meredith proved costly with the number 3 going on to reach 120 before succumbing to a well flighted filthy off-break from “Take That” Tomar. Prior to the cheeky number 3 being dismissed plenty of entertaining Sunday cricket antics were endured including a request for the bowler to remove his prescriptive glasses when bowling, requesting the short catching fielder to not create shadows on the pitch, walking between wickets “Ranatunga” style, having a good old fashioned barny with his teams skipper whilst batting and then proceeding to run the skipper out. Other highlights in our bowling stint included some tight bowling from “Buckets” Fairn and some very impressive spin bowling from not only “Take That” Tomar but also “Straight Arm” Khan.

Thankfully the T's closed the game out to notch up the 2nd victory in the Sunday league for the summer. Final scores Twickenham 354/4 vs Chiswick 296/6

Although the T's came away with the victory it has to be said that our efforts with the ball and in the field were a bit average. Next match with plenty of practise and discipline we will improve these weaknesses.
