2009 proved a great season for the ladies. Having won promotion to Division One, they played extremely well in this higher division, finishing a commanding 3rd, narrowly missing promotion yet again. Their successful season didn’t finish there, for they won the Middlesex and Surrey inaugural Club20 6 a-side competition played at Regents Park. They also had a great run in the Super 8’s competition, narrowly losing by 9 runs in the final to Leeds and Broomfield from Kent and were runners up in the Guildford 6’s.
With the ladies looking to improve on this in 2010, an exciting season lies ahead. The formation of the Women’s Cricket Southern League in 2004 has meant the transfer of the league administration from the ECB to the WCSL, which now offers cricket to 34 teams in the South divided into five leagues, with ultimate promotion to the ECB Premier League. Division One consist of eight team from the Counties of Hampshire, Essex, Kent, Middlesex and Sussex with matches played both home and away. In addition they will be fielding a number of extra fixtures on Saturdays and Wednesday evening, all of which ensures that, there is plenty of cricket available throughout the summer.
In addition to matches, nets are held on a Wednesday night starting April 14th and with coaching available from Martyn Fryer the Twickenham coach, it is an ideal opportunity to develop and improve cricket skills. Matches start on 24th April through to 12th September.
We are currently represented at County Level with three players in the Middlesex squad but in the past had International players as members and were the first women’s team to tour New Zealand, with previous tours to Holland and Ireland.
A good run in the league and Super 8’s is always the aim, although enjoyment of the game will also be the emphasis for captain Ann Baker. Ann has a wealth of experience to lead the team in a bid for a competitive 2010 season, ably supported by vice-captain Sunny Pottay. We look forward to seeing players, officials and supporters again this season and wish everyone a most successful and enjoyable season.
