Twickenham ladies 2009

Having won promotion to Division One last season, the ladies section is looking forward to the challenge of stepping up a notch from playing 40 overs to 45 and the meeting of new adversaries this summer.  The formation of the Women’s Cricket Southern League in 2004 has meant the transfer of the league administration from the ECB to the WCSL, which now offers cricket to 38 teams in the South divided into five leagues, with ultimate promotion to the ECB Premier League. Division One consist of eight team from the Counties of Hampshire, Hertfordshire, Kent, Middlesex and Sussex with matches played both home and away.

In addition to the competition matches, a scattering of friendly matches and entry to the inaugural Super 8’s competition in August ensures that, there is plenty of cricket available throughout the summer. The season starts in April with indoor training at Heston Community Sports Centre. Matches start on 25th April through to 20th September.

Now in our 10th season as the ladies section of Twickenham Cricket Club, the team over the years has had various grounds but is now comfortably settled at The Green and Broom Road, Teddington, enjoying the facilities of being part of an established club and all the benefits that it brings. The origins of the team however, go back to 1946 and 2006 saw the ladies celebrate 60 years of cricket.

In addition to weekend matches, nets are held on a Wednesday night and with coaching available, is an ideal opportunity to develop cricket skills. We are currently represented at County Level but in the past had International players as members and were the first women’s team to tour New Zealand, with previous tours to Holland and Ireland.

Once South Premier League Champions and winners of the National Knockout Cup, means that a good run in the league and Super 8’s is always the aim, although enjoyment of the game will also be the emphasis for Captain Ann Baker.  Ann has a wealth of experience to lead the team in a bid for a competitive 2009 season, ably supported by newly elected vice-captain Sunny Pottay. We look forward to seeing players, officials and supporters again this season and wish everyone a most successful and enjoyable season.
