Eugene Berger's last ball six sees the Ts home

Half-way through the chase I thought we'd blown it. But, cricket never ceases to surprise me

The Ts qualified for round two of the 2018 National Knockout with a dramatic last ball victory over Harrow St Mary's (see the card here). The visitors took first hit and posted a competitive 178-9 with skipper Aaman Soni (61) the star of the batting show. HSM's new signing from Shepherd's Bush, Pritesh Vaghala (41), also hit the ground running. Indeed, things could have been much worse for the Ts were it not for a late flurry of wickets (4-32) for Eugene Berger and some tight bowling from the ever-reliable Tom Grundy (3-31).

In return, the Ts started solidly enough but it wasn't long before they fell behind the rate. With that, bigger shots were inevitably called for and wickets started falling. Sanjit Sandhu (43) and Tom Field (42) nonetheless rebuilt the innings and their vital 90 run stand kept the hosts in the game.

Berger's Moment of Glory
Even then, HSM were still favourites going in to the last five overs. The Ts got the target down to 22 needed in 3 and then 15 in 2. But, the boundaries wouldn't come and as successive batters were sacrificed on the altar of quick runs the Ts' survival in the tournament ultimately came down to whether Eugene Berger could hit six off the final ball to win the game (on wickets lost as the scores would be level). The big bosher from Botswana rose to the challenge magnificently, plonking the ball straight over the bowler's head for a maximum. Magnificent stuff.

The Ts now move on to play either Eastcote or Richmond in round two. The game will take place on 13 May (see here for the full draw).
