Runs in the sun as the 2019 season gets underway on the Green

The shock when Andy Donelan managed to catch Steve Watts at third slip was palpable. I'm surprised no one had to be treated in A & E.

The sun shone and the runs flowed as the 2019 season arrived on Twickenham Green. Two TCC sides battled it out for bragging rights in the bar. Given the serene batting conditions, it's safe to say that the batters will have had more to say than the bowlers.

Ethan Wright (51 in 27 balls) and Mo Ahmad (50 in a rather more sedate 69 balls) set the tone for the day when they opened up, whilst Mesome Hussain (50 in 37 balls) and Ajmal Allahdad (35no in 28 balls) followed up their good work later in the innings. The ever-realiable Tom Field led the way with ball, helping himself to 3-24 whilst Kev Cavilla - having mutated in to an opening bowler - ended the day with 2-48.

Nomula's in the groove
Debutant Rishi Kanjani, a recent recruit from Moseley in Birmingham, stylishly drove and cut his way to 31 (29 balls) in reply, although he'll probably want to avoid looking at the reverse sweep dismissal on the pitchvision highlights package. Nikhil Nomula purred his way to an impressive half century lower down, whilst Robbie Bosier also spent some much needed practice time at the crease.

Rajdeep Chaudhary (3-28) led the way with the ball and a very lively Vijay Sanas (2-5 off 4 at the top of the innings) looked like he's going to be a real handful to bat against this year. The full card is available here.

Some things never change
Cricket may be developing at a rate of knots (IPL, 100 ball cricket etc.), but it's still pleasing to see that some things remain much as ever. Andy Donelan, a man who has made getting injured in to a fine art, managed to register his first mishap of 2019 before he'd even entered the field of play. Whilst putting together the slats on the sightscreen AD managed to slash the webbing on his hand to bits. As I say, some things really never do change.
