Bees move in to a new era with TCC Chairman at the helm

If this doesn't allow me a direct role in selection of the Brentford side then there will be hell to pay
- Paul Johnson

News broke this morning that long-standing TCC Chairman, Jon Varney ('Reg'), will soon (1 March) be taking up a new role as CEO of Brentford Football Club.

All at Twickenham CC (even the Fulham fans) wish Reg the very best in this new endeavour. He's certainly joining the Bees at an exciting time. As the club explain in their press release announcing the appointment, Brentford are on the cusp of moving to a new stadium and therefore in need of a commercially savvy CEO to take advantage of all the opportunities that that offers. A fantastic opportunity for Reg to make a mark at the club he's a long-time fan of.

Contractual Negotiations

The TCC Committee would nonetheless like to reassure the membership that we have been in long discussions with Reg and indeed Brentford about how he is going to balance this new role with that of being Chairman of our cricket club. All were in agreement that we can allow him five hours a week at Brentford, leaving the other 40 hours or so for him to concentrate on TCC activities. Brentford were perfectly happy with this arrangement, and, indeed, grateful that we were gracious enough to permit Reg to take that much time out of what is undoubtedly the biggest job in global sport.

Whether Reg will be able to take up his familiar position behind the stumps for TCC Vets in 2019 remains to be seen. That, however, will have less to do with his BFC commitments, and more to do with the quality and variety of ales on show at the bar at the time.

Best of luck, Reg!
In all seriousness, TCC really is overjoyed that Reg has taken on such an exciting role. We wish him all the very best!
