Hot Day at The Green
Downfall of the LBW's.
Hazel writes - Following on from some excellent results when batting first over the last few weeks, Twickenham captain, Hazel decided that she would shake things up a little and lose the toss to Bells Yew Green - a very decent batting side. Much to everyone’s annoyance, we took to the field first, knowing that Twickenham Desert, sorry Twickenham Green, would be a tough place to field on in 30 degree heat. However, as always, our excellent team spirit, top banter, bad jokes and persistent muttering pulled us through 40 long overs, alongside the delightful delivery of cold drinks at every 10! Our Fab 5 bowlers - Hazel, Bron, Sinead and Big and Little Charlotte each bowled their full quota of 8 overs and shared the wickets too, doing a sterling job of keeping BYG down to a total of 230-7; something that we thought was certainly ‘gettable’ on such a dry, fast outfield. Special mentions must go Big Charlotte V-S and her sunshine cap, for being providing an extra ray of light and keeping us so entertained on the field, and to both Lisa and Jess, who both got ‘shoved’ on boundaries from ball one. Their running, throwing and suntanning certainly helped prevent BYG from scoring many more boundaries.
After a lovely tea from Karen (the bread was so worth your lateness!) we set out to approach our target with Run Machine Sinead, Karen, Harriet and Hazel as our top 4, with the batting power of Big and Little Charlotte V-S and G, Marieke and Spugsie waiting in tow to swing their bats in the heat. Unfortunately, the curse of LBW after LBW after LBW ensued (and a few more to add to that) and our top order each struggled to get into the 20s after all making positive starts.
Meanwhile, Charlotte G and Marieke had other ideas and were starting to build an excellent partnership to steady the Twicks Ladies ship. With our run rate equalling BYG at every drinks break, they were both selecting their shots brilliantly. Marieke (21) was really showing off her excellent progress from attendance at nets and thoroughly enjoyed getting the time out in the middle. Charlotte G (53) reached yet another powerful half century (with some great forward defensive's thrown in for good measure) before falling (you guessed it) LBW to BYG’s opening medium pacer. Much to their dismay (at first!) Jess and Bron got to bat, and bat they did, displaying some excellent shots and running between the wickets, both finishing not out and thankfully walking off the field with huge smiles on their faces. We finished just 38 runs short but much fun was had by all. Dame of the game went to Little Charlotte G for her 53 runs, 2 wickets and a smart run out.
A special thank you to Spugsie and Lisa (nice spikes) for helping out and enabling us to play with 11, to Lizzy for wanting to umpire for us instead of having a day off and to Carol, Janet B, Janet G and Ann, who always do their background staffing jobs so well. We are all hugely thankful for it. A big farewell to Harriet too - travel safe, enjoy yourself and have a great time!
