League leaders Canterbury show the way.

Harriet writes - Yet again the sun was shining at Twickenham Green for the last league game of the season. In a season which availability of players has been a struggle (me being one of the main culprits) it was nice to be able to field 11 players for this game!

The Canterbury team, who topped the league prior to the match, seemed to have brought the whole of Canterbury to support. Therefore, they somewhat outnumbered our supporters!

Twickenham won the toss and elected to bat first. Pep talks over, Karen and Sinead went out to the middle. On a slow and dying pitch, which felt like a fourth day Test pitch at time, batting was slow, made harder by the Canterbury bowlers delivering line and length balls and very few bad balls. Karen soon fell LBW to a suspected ball. I then joined Sinead at the crease with a ‘defend every ball’ approach. Opening bowers seen off, we then looked to build a partnership. Canterbury soon got frustrated with the left-right combination, the speed of Twickenham Green’s fast outfield and began to bowl some bad balls for us to take advantage of. The partnership of 77 ended when Sinead was LBW (Sinead - 26) and I soon followed as I was bowled (Harriet - 38).

This brought a determined looking Hazel to the crease, who together with Penny, set about rotating the strike. Penny and Charlotte looked to increase the run rate, however both fell victim to Canterbury’s bowlers. Charlotte VS then joined Hazel at the crease (as Charlotte pointed out from the boundary – the tallest and shortest members of the team). The combination seemed to work – even if VS was hogging the strike! As both looked to hit out, it was VS who produced a beautiful straight drive over mid-off for 4 runs. However, not to be outdone, Hazel created an equally beautiful shot in the last over of the innings- anything you can do I can do better! Both finished not out (Hazel – 34no) (Charlotte VS – 15no).

Having eaten a delicious tea, thank you Charlotte (though I’m still not sure about jam in a sandwich), Twickenham took to the field.

Both Canterbury’s openers were left-handed and seemed to enjoy pulling everything offside to leg, no matter how far outside off, it was bowled. This in turn caused much frustration to our bowlers and fielders and meant that Canterbury got off to a flying start. Despite, Charlotte VS’s pinning the batters back into their crease neither batsmen looked like they were giving up their wicket easily.

Indeed, in spite of our bowlers best efforts (Charlotte showing her Moeen Ali impression) and some inspirational fielding from Penny, Georgie and myself (who then showed my lack of football skills), as well as some other interesting fielding techniques, from VS (ducking from the ball) and Sinead rehearsing for the next Chariots of Fire film, we were unable to make the breakthrough. As the end neared, it became a numbers game for the Canterbury pair as one hit her century to win the game. She finished with figures of 102no and 4-22 for the game.
