Big wins for 3s and 4s in Week 15 of the MCCL

Big wins for 3s and 4s in Week 15 of the MCCL

Dan Hough17 Aug - 06:25

Twickenham seconds slip up, but 3s and 4s continue their promotion charges.

Mehran Iqbal took his 200th wicket for the Ts on Saturday. An impressive effort by the ever-reliable 4th XI opening bowler
- Hinay Dassani

With both the Twickenham 1st XI and the 5th XI on bye weeks, eyes turned to the 2nds, 3rds and 4ths to see if they could carry on their promotion charges. The 3s and 4s rose to the challenge admirably, claiming impressive wins against Indian Gym and SKLP respectively. The 2s slipped up against Barnes, although they still remain second and very much in the promotion conversation. The 5s, meanwhile, got themselves involved in a friendly encounter with Wembley 4s on the Green. They won in what was a thoroughly decent affair.

Good day for the ones (even without playing)
The ones didn't play in Week 15 so they watched from afar as their promotion rivals tried to claw back some points. Finchley managed to do just that, beating Wycombe House by 82 runs. That leaves the Ts top of the pile with Finchley four points behind (see here for the table). The Ts do nonetheless have a game in hand.

Brondesbury, however, slipped up. They lost by seven wickets against Acton. That sees Acton move into third and Bron slip to fourth. The Ts play Acton in Week 16; if Carlos Nunes's side win that game and Bron lose at Indian Gym then Twickenham will be promoted.

Bosier (R) leads the 3s from the front
The threes also had a good day. They've gone from worrying about relegation to charging into the promotion zone. Ultimately they'll probably need to win each of their final three games to do that, but the way they are playing anything is possible (see here for the table).

In Week 15 they travelled to Indian Gym. The Ts had first hit, putting an eminently respectable 242 on the board. Ollie George (60 off 67) led the way, Monish Malhotra (35 off 38) backed him up admirably. Skipper Robbie Bosier (35no off 27 balls), batting at ten, finished things off impressively.

The Twickenham bowlers carried on the good work with a solid all-round performance. Bosier, Praween Siriwardena and Nishan Singh took three wickets apiece, Imran Niazai claimed the tenth scalp. The Ts won by an impressive 153 runs.

The permutations at the top of Division Three of the third tier are now manifold. First up, the Ts need to beat struggling Wycombe House 3s in Week 16. Two potentially blockbuster games against promotion rivals Bessborough and Hornsey then beckon.

4s impress at Broom Road
The fours were similarly impressive in their demolition of SKLP (see here for the card). They are still outside the two promotion slots, but the ball is still firmly in their court (see here for the table). They sit two points behind Ealing Trailfinders, but, crucially, Hinay Dassani's side has a game in hand. Calm nerves, clear heads and promotion is well and truly on.

The Ts batted first and put in a commanding display. Steve Cowley set the tone with a breezy 24 at the top, Frankie Lingemann, batting at three, then carried that on with a punchy 61.

Nitin Parab swept nicely and ran sharply - he added 60, before Akshay Kumar (batting at ten) bludgeoned his way to 54no at the end. Indeed, Kumar put on an undefeated 64 with number 11 Hinay Dassani (13no) to really turn the screw.

In reply, Shah Bozdar bowled a tremendous first over, removing opener Keshra Kabariya four ball of the innings with a brute of a ball. That very much set the tone. It subsequently wasn't long before the ever-consistent Mehran Iqbal made inroads at the other end. Iqbal helped himself to his third five-wicket-haul of the season and indeed his 16th (!) in Twickenham colours. In the course of taking 6-28 he claimed his 200th wicket for the Ts (at an average of 11). Impressive stuff from the bearded assassin.

Hinay Dassani (1-25 off 7) also grabbed a wicket, but it was Akshay Kumar who finished things off. Kumar adopted the Josh Tongue approach to bowling; some booming wides mixed in with some really good deliveries. In the end it was Kumar (2-14) who caught a steepler of a catch off his own bowling to end proceedings.

Donelan on the rampage for the fives
The 5s didn't have any league cricket on the agenda, but they nonetheless took to the field against Wembley 4s. And, they won an entertaining encounter on the Green by 31 runs (see here for the card).

Stand in skipper Harry Tebb won the prestigious MVT (Most Valuable Tebb) award not just by claiming the highest total of the three Tebbs who turned out on Saturday, but also by grabbing a wicket maiden at the end and indeed by skippering the 5s to their triumph. 100 per cent record for Tebb (H) on the captaincy front in 2025 then.....

Andy Donelan will have enjoyed his day out on the Green. He scored an eye-catching 69 (73 balls) to get things up and running. Thomas Hopkins (53no off 49) carried on the good work lower down with Sean Daly (26no off 40) chipping in admirably as the two of them put on an undefeated 93.

239 always looked like it'd be a challenge for Wembley, but, still, they chased admirably enough. Raj Bathia hit 51 and Prem Pravinkumar notched 40 as they made inroads.

The Sultan of Swing, Pete Burke (2-53), nonetheless chipped admirably away at the top order, whilst the irrepressible Ryan Oakes took three wickets later on. Anir Dontula (3-44) carried on the good work, before Thomas Hopkins (1-26) and the skipper (1-0) drew a line under proceedings.

Bad day at the office for the twos
Only the seconds had a bad day at the office. They travelled down to the A316 to Barnes looking to extend their lead at the top of Division One of the second tier. They didn't quite happen; Barnes won by seven wickets (see here for the card).

Only three Twickenham players managed to get into double-figures. Varad Rampal (27 off 35) and Callum Watson (22 off 42) were the standouts there. Ed Jones (3-27) did most of the damage for Barnes.

In reply, Barnes cruised merrily along and got past the Ts' total with just the three wickets down. Tomos Innes (41 off 30) opened up, Alex Graham (22no off 21) was there at the end. Blake van der Linde was arguably the pick of the Twickenham bowlers (1-31 off 9).

The twos remain second in the league (see here), four behind Stanmore and 14 ahead of Eastcote. Those two sides meet in Week 16....
