204 games, 4121 runs at an average of 26.7. Throw in 50 wickets for good measure and that, by anyone’s standards, is a rock solid Twickenham CC career. And that’s before we even get near the leadership and overall commitment to the cause.

Steve Watts has served Twickenham CC admirably since joining the club in 2010. A stalwart of the seconds and then a leader of the thirds, he’s now off to the land of Arnold Muhren and Frans Thyssen, of John Wark and Eric Gates to work for Ipswich Town as they endeavour to stay in the Premier League. But, there was time for one last hurray on Twickenham Green. That hurrah proved to be a brilliant day with old friends against excellent opponents in SKLPC.

In the end, SKLPC won at a canter (see here for the card). Nayan Gajparia hit 60 (off 56 balls) and ‘keeper Rithik Kerai added 69no (off 87) to see the visitors to 203-8 off 40.

For the Ts another club legend, Stuart Amos, was the star of the bowling show. Amos whirled merrily away from the Green Spice (may it rest in peace) End and was excellent value for his 3-17. Rumour has it he even turned one.

Watts himself tweaked and twirled four overs down from the Pavilion End, and although tumbleweed blew through the wickets column, it was great to see the familiar frog in a blender style action in full flow. Hinay Dassani (2-18), Sourav Salgotra (1-46) and Ali Malik (1-16) all stepped up nicely, Tom Hopkins will have been pleased with what’s widely presumed to be his first ever senior stumping. All good.

Could Twickenham chase 203 down? No. Not that It massively mattered.

Imran Niazai opened up and added a breezy 23 (21) to the pot, Watts came in at four and kept things moving along. Oli George, a man who has regularly scored well all season, was probably the Ts’ best home of hauling in SKLP’s total, but once he departed the scene (14 off 36) the end was nigh.

Ali Malik (20 off 20) and current third XI skipper Robbie Bosier (11 off 14) did what they could, but the Ts ultimately closed well short on 116.

An excellent game played by excellent people. Thanks for everything, Wattsy, and best of luck in Suffolk moving forward.
