Three wins, two defeats for the Ts in Week 3 of the MCCL

Three wins, two defeats for the Ts in Week 3 of the MCCL

Dan Hough18 May - 09:07

Ones and threes dominate, fours win the clash of the titans against the fives

Week 2 generally went pretty well for the Ts. The 1st XI put in a good display to cruise past Southgate whilst the thirds were also similarly impressive in defeating North London. The fours won the clash of the titans with the fifths, so it was only the seconds - losing heavily at Stanmore - who had a genuinely bad day at the office.

Nunes century sets ones on their way
The ones won in Week One and they have have now won in Week Two. So, 20 points out of 20 and a position at the top of the nascent league table alongside Finchley and Brondesbury (see here for the table).

Carlos Nunes very much led the way, scoring a round 100 (off 87 balls) as the Ts posted 284 off their 45 (see here for the card). Neville Talbot (52 off 41) and 'keeper Ben Leale-Green (53no off 70) also chipped in nicely, as did Akash Multani scoring a quickfire 17 at the end.

In reply Southgate never really got out of the blocks. Angus Parker (3-23 off 7) bowled impressively, and although number seven Kunaal Kankate (66no off 92) led something of a rearguard, Gus McKenzie span his way to 2-23 and even Patrick Dixon saw some action in the wickets column (1-15). Rumour has it Haley's Comet flew past at exactly the time Dixon dismissed Darragh Edwards.....

The win sets the ones up nicely. Before the season Finchley and Bron were the bookies' favourites, and they do indeed look like they will be setting the pace. The Ts, however, can do no more than win the games they play and that they have certainly done. Next week sees the first of the really big clashes loom large. The Ts travel to Brondesbury.

Seven for Siriwardena as threes triumph
The threes were also successful in Week Two, they beat North London by an impressive 76 runs.

Olli George, batting at his spiritual home of Broom Road, led the way for Robbie Bosier's men. His elegant 61 ensured that the Ts were well set to put a decent total on the board. Nishan Singh, a man who has quietly started well for the Ts this season, added 38 later on whilst the gaffer himself chipped in with a nice little unbeaten 30. That enabled the Ts to close on 222.

Would chasing Double Nelson be too much for North London? It would indeed. An unbeaten 50 from the visiting number three, Charlie Smith, was the cornerstone of the visitors' innings, but four ducks elsewhere did little to help their cause.

The indomitable Praween Siriwardena was very much at the centre of the Twickenham bowling attack, and he caused nothing short of carnage. Just the 7-30. That takes Siriwardena to 150 wickets in Twickenham colours at an average of just over 18. Decent stuff!

Nishan Singh (1-30) and Max Hunt (1-31) were also in the wickets as North London closed a long way short. That leaves the Ts nicely mid-table with a trip to Chiswick – a team in a pretty similar position – to look forward to next week.

Fours avoid the banana skin
The match that nonetheless caught everyone’s eye was the big clash between the Twickenham CC 4s and the Twickenham CC 5s. Long-awaited and eagerly anticipated.

Ultimately, the match itself went very much to form. The fours won the toss and opted to have a bowl. The 5s struggled gamely, but couldn’t really get into any sort of rhythm; Jon Bosier’s boys were 68 all out.

In reply, the 4s didn’t have it all their own way – Liam Tebb being brutally dismissed by a certain Mr Adam Tebb – but they did get where they needed to go. 70-5 and ten points safely in the back pocket.

That leaves the fours with two wins from two. They are, much like the ones, one of three sides remaining with 100 per cent records. And, again much like the ones, something will budge in Week Three; the fours visit fellow pacesetters Chiswick.

The fives, meanwhile, travel to Actonians Fives; two sides looking for their first win of the campaign there….

Day to forget for the twos
The twos, meanwhile, had a bad day at the office; they lost by 168 runs at Stanmore IIs (see here for the card).

Stanmore skipper Panav Patel set the tone, he anchored the innings impressively. He ended with 127no off 123 balls. Krish Danuka (86 off 77) also caught the eye as all of the Ts’ bowlers toiled.

Anush Ganesh (3-59) was again in the wickets. James Smith (2-44) and skipper Blake van der Linde (2-56) also claimed a couple of sets of poles each.

The Twickenham reply was something of a stop-start affair. Hamish Johnston (32), van der Linde (31), ‘keeper Mark Peters (26) and Sami Shori (21) all got in, but none of them went on to get the big score Twickenham were going to need if they were going to put Stanmore under any pressure.

For their part, Stanmore spread the wickets around with Kellen Dubignon (2-14 off 6) leading the way.

Next week the 2s return to Twickenham Green where they host unbeaten Eastcote. Could be an interesting one…
