Twickenham welcomed the MCC to the Green on Thursday 7 August and, entirely as was expected, the day was a hugely enjoyable affair; good cricket, strong off-the-field performances and runs galore. Marvellous.
Barnes's Tom Bale makes hay
Cricket Week games are never about the result but, for the record, it was Twickenham who ultimately came out on top (see here for the card) in this one.
The MCC batted first and skipper (and Twickenham CC Chairman) Eugene Berger opted to declare with a pretty imposing 298 on the board. Barnes's Tom Bale, a man who knows Twickenham Green pretty well, batted imperiously on his way to 104 (85 balls) while Tom Brammer batted every bit as impressively for his 81 (74 balls).
For the Ts, it was the evergreen Ethan Wright who caught the eye with the ball. He tweaked and twirled his way to 2-33. Young Matthew Parker bowled nicely, whilst Angus Parker (no relation) also grabbed a brace of wickets as the Ts' bowlers did their best to keep a grip on proceedings.
Manuwelge runs riot
Berger's declaration left the Ts with somewhere between 45-50 overs to bat. With quicker than a run-a-ball needed the men from St John's Wood were favourites.
They reckoned without the mercurial Kevin Cavilla. He cut, he drove, he pulled. Indeed, it can officially be reported that it even looked like he knew what he was doing. Cavilla (69 off 81) opened and put on 152 with the equally impressive Ethan Wright (79 off 56).
With base camp reached, the Ts' middle order then set off for the summit. Donny Manuwelge (87no off 64) hit 16 fours and a couple of sixes, Carlos Nunes (35no off 30) limited himself to just the four boundaries before matching Manuwelge on the six-hitting front. Messrs Chappell, Munday and Parker claimed wickets for the MCC.
As ever, all concerned deserve a huge pat on the back for putting on such an excellent day. Marvellous stuff.
