Close but no cigar as U12s miss chance to go top

The Twickenham CC U12s have been in decent form of late. The cricketing gods nonetheless somehow seemed to conspire against them in the run up to their 10 June contest against Kew, but it's to the Ts' credit that they still nearly pulled off a victory when the odds at once stage looked very much against them (see here for the card).

Twickenham rein Kew in
Kew won the toss and decided to have a bat. Their innings had a rather inauspicious start, Finn Fowler bowling Theo Shepherd without the opener having troubled the scorers.

Ansh Trichur came in at three and he soon started the Kew fightback. His 34 off 31 got things moving nicely before 'keeper Ruhaan Vinod came in and boshed 29 off just 15 balls.

Hugh Bunch (2-9) again bowled impressively for the Ts, as did Dani Zouheir (2-12). Evan Davies and Nicholas Williams also picked up wickets, ensuring the Kew closed on 132; a score that was considerably less than some were fearing when Trichur and Vinod were batting.

Bunch and Walker go for broke
Getting that sort of score was nonetheless going to require some excellent batting from Twickenham. Nicholas Williams (12 off 17) set things off well enough, and number three Hugh Bunch built on that to really set the Ts up nicely. When he departed for 53 (off just 38 balls) the Ts were in a decent place.

Oliver Walker (25no off 17) certainly did all he could to keep the momentum going, but ultimately there wasn't quite enough in the tank for the Ts to get passed Kew's total. They fell seven short and had to settle for 8 points.

The defeat leaves the Ts second, but now without that game in hand. Can they still catch Teddington (eight points above them)? A win a week on Wednesday against Richmond would be a big step in that direction.
