Rain was very much in the 'hood on Saturday 6 June, and only a small number of games across the 26 divisions of the Middlesex County Cricket League managed to make it to the end. Four of the five Premier League encounters fell victim to the weather.....the one that did not was Twickenham v Stanmore. And, the Ts will be very pleased that that was so. They won by 49 runs (see here for the card).
Himanshukumar and White star with the bat
The drama nonetheless began on Twickenham Green before a ball had even been bold. Adam Mather turned his ankle in the warm up. That left him forlorn on the veranda with an ice pack strapped on the offending leg. No cricket on the agenda for him on Saturday.
Meaning? Hamish Johnston got the call, and he hastily made his way over to the Green to don the coloured clothing and take his place in the side. He wasn't, however, immediately required to do much. The Ts batted and after a wobbly start soon made good progress.
Preet Himanshukumar (74 off 82 balls) and Ollie White (68 off 82) put on 127 as the Ts moved at a decent rate of knots. That meant that by the time rain came (38.3 overs) Twickenham were on 177-5.
With drizzle holding things up the sides took an early tea. By the time they re-emerged 37 overs were left in the game and Stanmore needed 220 to win.
Solid work all round in the field
220 looked like a tough target. It looked even tougher when Rashid Mullazahdah and the ebullient Faf Fourie took a wicket apiece in their respective first overs. 0-2 and the Ts had their tails up.
Mullazahdah in particular bowled magnificently. His figures of 2-5 off 5 did much to put the Ts well ahead of the game.
Gavon Christian nonetheless looked decent value at three, and his 38no (55 balls) was well composed. Yet, around him things were not going nearly as well for Stanmore. Akash Multani (1-16 off 5.2) span his webs admirably, Ollie White and Don Manuwelge helped turned the screw. By the time Daniel O'Driscoll was run out (28 off 45) and the visitors' wily old skipper Grant Reigold holed out to Fourie, Stanmore were a long way behind where they needed to be.
So, when the rain inevitably came Twickenham were (1) thankful that they'd (just) got past the 20 over mark in the second innings and (2) perfectly happy to see the conditions get progressively worse. Carlos Nunes's side have not always been on the ride side of DLS shenanigans, but today they were.
The win sees the Ts close the gap to the rest of the top flight pack. Indeed, a win next week and they could be as high as 5th (see here for the current table).
Nothing doing elsewhere
Elsewhere there was nothing doing for Twickenham's four other league sides.
The 2s did travel to Stanmore, but it didn't take long for them to realise that the weather was going to be the winner. They had pulled the plug by mid-afternoon.
The 3s, 4s and 5s were also all rained off, although there the decisions were made much earlier. Indeed, they didn't travel at all. Some days it's just not meant to be.
On to next week....
