Finchley have the upper hand with Twickenham fielding only 10

Spuggie writes - Well it wasn’t the Twickenham Sahara but it was a damp and dreary Potters Bar, and with Janet’s rule of ‘no late fines today’ the Twickers ladies arrived in good spirits. Our ‘mature’ and ‘experienced’ team (NOT old- thank you Finchley!) even had time to pause during their extensive warm up and prepare the pitch for our opposition by removing the covers. We were ready for action!

The frowning-emojo duo (Hazel and Sinead) opened the bowling and it wasn’t long before the breakthrough. In the 6th over Hazel turned her frown upside down as she took the first of her three wickets of the match (3 for 22 off 8 overs). Hazel bowled brilliantly and could well have taken several more wickets had Charlotte been fielding in the correct place.

Twickenham continued to strike at regular intervals as Hazel was well supported on the bowling front by ‘Muttering Molly’ (Sinead - 1 for 27 off 8 overs) and Bron (2 for 30 off 8 overs). Bron ‘Twickenham’s youth policy’, clearly thought it was a county fixture as she came dressed in the modern day COLOURED CLOTHING, but Twickenham were happy to let this go – at least until the after-match fines. Marieke, Charlotte and Lois also supported the bowling line up, with Marieke’s best over being her ‘silent’ one – silent but deadly! With excessive talking now outlawed, Spuggie merely smiled and chuckled quietly as, after receiving years of confidence-damaging bullying, she found a friend in Lois who has what can only be described as an East Anglian style of run up not dissimilar to her own. Well bowled Lois!

Notable performances in the field came from ‘Readytorun Jess’ having secured her power nap in the car park before the game, Lois for her excellent ground fielding, Karen for always being in the correct fielding position and her graceful dives, and lastly Ivesy for the most spectacular show of break dancing I have ever seen (or it might have just been cramp!).

With the renewed confidence that friendship brings, Spuggie held her own behind the stumps and produced the best keeping stats of the season so far!!! (In my view anyway!!)

With Finchley finishing on 176 for 9, Twickenham enjoyed an athlete’s tea consisting of pizza, chips and cakes and were soon ready to rip down the wicket like a whippet.

This started with Sinead and Karen who had a solid opening partnership of 49, followed by Charlotte who scored a quick 33 runs. Good job she had a quality, light weight bat which enabled her to turn and run 2’s with lightning speed. Marieke, Bron and Spuggie also contributed a few runs with scores of 12, 19 and 17 respectively. Marieke is even thinking of buying her own bat now.

Unfortunately Twickenham were unable to reach Finchley’s total, falling just 18 runs short but this will not deter them from training hard for their next fixture and undoubtedly coming back stronger and faster. Our next oppo better be ready because we are only just getting warmed up!

WWW (what went well): General high quality bants!

EBI (even better if): Marieke could learn to throw!

Thank you to Lois and Ivesy for playing with us this week, and to Carol and Janet for their continuous efforts and support. Thank you to Brian for umpiring. Bring on the next match!
