Twickenham Under-9s edged past Moormead U9s in a closely fought encounter at Moormead Park, thanks to a superb bowling and fielding display. The old saying that “catches win matches” proved true, with Twickenham holding every chance that came their way — ultimately the difference between the two sides.

The welcome return of opening bowler Zac White gave Twickenham the perfect start. Zac struck in the opening over and finished with excellent figures of 1 wicket for just 4 runs from his two overs. He was well supported by Connor Thomson, who kept things tight at the other end, conceding only 9 runs from his spell.

Ted Aldred produced a much-improved bowling performance, showing the value of hard work in training by finishing with outstanding figures of 3 wickets for 8 runs. Alongside him, Orson bowled Lasith Malinga-style and claimed 1 wicket for 11 runs.

Arthur Keates picked up his first wicket for Twickenham, finding movement off the seam to induce an edge that was smartly taken behind the stumps by Charlie. Dominic Jones also impressed on his debut for Twickenham, immediately making an impact by hitting the top of middle stump on his way to figures of 1 for 11.

The bowlers faced a stern challenge towards the end of the innings from Moormead batters Caleb (8) and Jack (20), who regularly found the boundary and forced Twickenham to send out boundary riders to contain the scoring.

Overall, it was an excellent bowling and fielding performance from Twickenham, with several players showing clear improvement in their skills. The team held all their catches, took both run-out opportunities, and took nine wickets for 263 runs.

Arthur Keates and Dominic Jones opened the batting for Twickenham. Arthur struck his first boundary for the club during an otherwise watchful start from the opening pair.

Zac and Rory came in second and helped lift the run rate. Both players cleared the infield with confident pull shots to the boundary, sharing an important partnership of 13.

Ted and Emily added another 4 runs despite facing some inconsistent bowling. Ted played a strong pull shot for two, while Emily also contributed a well-run two runs.

It was the next pairing of Orson Hill and James Buxton who added the momentum Twickenham needed with an excellent partnership of 20. They played an array of expansive shots, ran hard between the wickets, and put the fielding side under constant pressure. Chaotic scenes ensued as the fielding side conceded several overthrows, but the platform needed for the final overs had been set.

Following strong performances the previous week, Charlie Ross-Sampson and Connor Thompson were selected as the final pairing. They edged towards the target before briefly losing a wicket, but quickly settled down to rotate the strike smartly while protecting their wicket. The winning runs came in style, with Charlie driving gloriously through cover for two, sealing the victory and allowing Twickenham to head back up the High Street with their second win of the season.
