Twickenham CC U15s vs. Switzerland U15s
Who knew that not only do Switzerland play cricket but they were in England on a short tour
and wanted to play against T’s? The draw of playing against an international side was too
great to turn down.
So the match was squeezed into the usual busy Sunday schedule between AllStars and a
women’s fixture - with a team raised from the available players in u15s, u14s and u13s (and
a returning lapsed player for a guest appearance).
T’s agreed to bowl first with the Swiss short of a couple of players but it was agreed that
some batters could return to the crease if required. T’s opened up with pace and spin (a la
CWC19) and the first wicket fell to a smart run out by Cameron with the Swiss on 5. As usual
there was rotation in the bowling with the second wicket falling in the 5th over to Freddie,
who also got a wicket courtesy of a smart boundary catch by Hamish. Wickets were taken
every 20 runs or so and were shared across the bowlers, as were the wickets. Special
mentions for Sean’s leg-spin and Chinaman Henry with figures of 1 wicket for 5 off his 2
overs. Cameron and Olly mopped up the tail taking 4 wickets between them for 16 runs in
less than 4 overs. The Swiss totalled 116 all out.
In reply unfortunately neither opener troubled the scorers and T’s were 5-2 in the first over.
Cameron and George steadied the ship, with shots all round the wicket and some smart
running. They batted together for 10 overs taking the score to 72 before Cameron edged
behind for an impressive 46. George took the attack with some impressive strikes including
one huge 6, which was dropped by one of the Swiss supporters beyond the boundary.
George tried one shot too many and was bowled for 29, with the score on 90 for 3 in the
11th over. Cue middle order collapse - 90 for 6 in the 12th over. Harry joined Olly at the
crease - both hit some impressive fours before a South African-esque run out of Olly. Harry
then hit a full toss straight back at the bowler to took an impressive self-preservation catch.
104-8; plenty of overs left, 13 to win with Henry and Hamish at the crease. The left and right
hand combination seemed to unnerve the Swiss and with 2 lusty blows from Henry and a
nice 4 from Hamish saw T’s home to win by 2 wickets.
A fine match played in a great spirit finished just in time for the women’s league match (we
are grateful for their understanding and co-operation). Well played to the Swiss and also to
T’s for remaining cool in the final stages. Thank you to Scott for arranging, Conrad for
umpiring and Al for getting the team together during half-term.
