The u9's got their 2018 season under way at Orlean Park School in glorious conditions on Sunday (this was a fr cry from the usual early season weather)! Whilst we were 2nd best to a well drilled Hampton Wick Royals side, there were lots of positives to take from the day. Some excellent batting from Oscar, Alfie and Henry (who were the top 3 scorers in the whole match), helped get us to a competitive total of 282, however the loss of 8 wickets means this was reduced to 242 (note: in these pairs format matches, all teams start on 200 runs, and lose 5 runs for each wicket). We knew taking wickets was the key, and all the bowlers put in 100% effort - and Ryan, Spencer, Alfie were rewarded with a wicket each; with two more to Oscar. To cap off a excellent all round display, Alfie also took a good catch behind the stumps. Special mention to the direct hits in the field from both Ryan and Oscar, which were so close to resulting in run outs. Ultimately, Hampton Wick ended up 292, with the loss of 5 wickets reducing their score to 267, and victory by 25 runs. A closer look at the scorecard shows you the big difference between the teams was the number of wides bowled - we conceded an extra 30 runs in wides compared to Hampton Wick - so good to have something to focus on at training before the next match. Our focus for 2018 is very much on trying to give all members of the squad plenty of playing time, so that next year (when we will be playing with a hard ball, and moving to a more competitive environement), they are as prepared as possible. Anyway, a very enjoyable start to the season - roll on match 2 (on 13th May - away to Teddington CC). Please remember to keep your availability up to date!
